Universitario claimed a record-extending 27th league title after a 2-0 win at city rivals Alianza on Wednesday had wrapped up a 3-1 aggregate victory. But before the celebrations could get underway the lights went out at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, an incident Universitario labelled both disgraceful and dangerous. The club added that the award ceremony will be held at their home Monumental U stadium on Sunday. Universitario later poked fun at their rivals' move on social media and issued a reminder about the league title count. "Say goodbye to unforeseen events, don't be left without electricity in the middle of your celebrations," the club wrote.

The Common Goal initiative will provide mental health training to coaches from more than 15 youth sports organisations, focusing on issues including anxiety, depression and loneliness, after the World Cup. "It’s long overdue that our soccer communities put mental health at the forefront when we discuss player care," Common Goal USA Executive Director Lilli Barrett-O’Keefe said in a statement. The United States are seeking an unprecedented third consecutive title, and fifth overall, at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, kicking off their campaign on Saturday against Vietnam. The American soccer players are the latest athletes to take up the cause of mental health, after Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles and four-times tennis major winner Naomi Osaka helped flip the narrative on a topic once seen as taboo in high-level sport. CNN —Peru’s health ministry said on Thursday that Corinthians are not at risk of contracting Guillain-Barre syndrome when they visit the country next week after the coach of the Brazilian soccer team voiced concerns about playing in Lima. Guillain-Barre is a very rare and serious condition that affects the nerves, causing problems such as numbness, weakness and pain. Speaking to journalists after Tuesday’s match, he said those responsible for overseeing the tournament should make a decision to protect players. In response to Luxemburgo’s comments, Peru’s health ministry said in a statement that Guillain-Barre is not transmitted from person to person and that the players “are not at risk of contagion” in the country. “In Peru, there is no restriction regarding this disease, whether they are meetings, national or international trips, events, among others,” it said.
